Service Level Agreements The Technology Industry Research - 825 Words

Service Level Agreements: The Technology Industry Research (Essay Sample) Content: Service Level AgreementsName:Institution:Date of Submission: Service Level AgreementsThe topic of Service Level agreement is fueling a lot of debate from scholars and practitioners in the technology industry. This owes to the reality that Bianco, Lewis, and Merson (2008) completed a publication on the topic in question. What is a Service Level agreement? According to the aforementioned authors, service level agreements are documents that define the level of service between a service provider and a service consumer. It defines the performance, reliability, and the quality of services the end user expects. As a result, service level agreements ensure that the right information arrives to the intended person, in the right location and time. Apparently, organizations develop Service level for various reasons. However, the main reason for drafting service level agreements is to spell out the responsibilities of the user and service provider in relation the service at hand. This work discuses the role of Service Level agreements in different areas of the technology industry. To begin with, Service Level Agreements can help new entrants into a market to establish their organizations as steadfast service providers. This owes to the reality that managing communication can be complicated in large organizations. It follows that designing what is significant for success and developing a mutual agreement between the client and the service providers is a fundamental ingredient to building a successful relationship. This opinion is highlighted by Kumar and Pradhan (2013) who mention that a well-implemented Service Agreement Program; with jointly agreed stipulations that are reported in a timely fashion can create a balanced contractual consent between the client and the service provider. The same authors further assert that ensuring that both parties have a symbiotic and open relationship results to better resolutions and optimal delivery. Service Level Agreem ents (SLAs) promote all the facets of Kumar and Pradhans (2013) argument. Therefore, it can help new entrants to establish their organization in any market. Bianco, Lewis, and Merson (2008) argue that Service interactions in organizations infuse business processes and become crucial in fulfilling an organizations objective. Consequently, SLAs institute obligations that promote an effective interaction between the service providers and the end users. Additionally, Service Level Agreements help clients in validating and supervising the quality of services through non-exception and scheduled reports. It is notable that information technology enterprises that sell their services to second and third parties appreciate the magnitude of safeguarding the service level agreements. This owes to the reality that these organizations use software and programs to check the progress of their services. The same programs and software enable the service recipients to provide both positive and negativ e feedback to the service providers. Evidently, these procedures ensure that the service recipients participate in assessing the quality of services provided by their service providers. There are additional benefits of Service level agreements to both the service providers and end users. For instance, Goo, Kishore, and Rao (2009) argue that SLAs provide the policies, procedures, and jurisdictional matters for the services offered to clients. In case of a misunderstanding between the end user and the service providers, SLAs provide clear guidelines on the possible solutions to the misunderstanding. In most cases, Service Level Agreements will fine the responsible party in case of a misunderstanding. Nonetheless, there are exceptional cases that Service Level Agreements lead to lawsuits. Furthermore, the same authors reveal that Service Level Agreements tackles crucial topics like data backup services for the end users. These services are particularly important in case unpredictable e vents like earthquakes, network failures, and terrorist attacks. Evidently, the guidelines in SLAs are important to end users and service providers of the technology industry. The current world is dominated by businesses that depend on the services of second and third part businesses. For instance, an online travel-booking business interacts with other service providers. These service providers include banks that authorize credit card transaction, hotels for making reservations, airlines, and rental companies. Definition and Uses of the Definite Article the in English

In English, the definite article the is a determiner that refers to particular nouns. As Laurel J. Brinton has noted, There are several different uses for each article, articles are often omitted, and there are dialectal differences in the use of articles. Thus, article usage can be an area of grammar which is very difficult for non-native speakers to master (The Linguistic Structure of Modern English, 2010). Examples of the in Sentences She closed the carton carefully. First, she kissed her father, then she kissed her mother. Then she opened the lid again, lifted the pig out, and held it against her cheek.(E.B. White, Charlottes Web. Harper, 1952)Now, as always, the most automated appliance in a household is the mother.(Beverly Jones, 1970)Horseshoes are lucky. Horses have four bits of lucky nailed to their feet. They should be the luckiest animals in the world. They should rule the country.(Eddie Izzard, Definite Article, 1996)Writing is a solitary occupation. Family, friends, and society are the natural enemies of the writer.(Jessamyn West)The greatest part of a writers time is spent in reading.(Samuel Johnson, quoted by James Boswell in The Life of Samuel Johnson, 1791)Im a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.(Thomas Jefferson)It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.(Abraham Maslow, The Psychology of Science: A Reconna issance. Harper, 1966)You have been in every prospect I have ever seen since--on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea, in the streets.(Charles Dickens, Great Expectations, 1861)The barbarians come out at night. Before darkness falls the last goat must be brought in, the gates barred, a watch set in every lookout to call the hours.(J.M. Coetzee, Waiting for the Barbarians. Secker Warburg, 1980) The Various Pronunciations of the The pronunciation of the definite article changes, depending upon the initial sound of the word that it precedes. If the word begins with a consonant sound, the e in the is pronounced uh: the (thuh) ball, the (thuh) bat. If the word begins with a vowel sound, the e makes a long vowel sound like in sweet: the (thee) automobile, the (thee) exorcist.(Michael Strumpf and Auriel Douglas, The Grammar Bible. Henry Holt, 2004) Major Uses of the In broad outline, the major uses of the are the following: 1. for something previously mentioned: yesterday I read a book . . . the book was about space travel (This is the anaphoric, or pointing back, function of the definite article);2. for a unique or fixed referent: the Prime Minister, the Lord, the Times, the Suez Canal;3. for a generic referent: (I love) the piano, (We are concerned about) the unemployed;4. for something which is part of the immediate socio-physical context or generally known: the doorbell, the kettle, the sun, the weather;5. for something identified by a modifying expression either preceding or immediately following the noun: the gray horse, the house at the end of the block; and6. for converting a proper noun to a common noun: the England he knew, the Shakespeare of our times, the Hell I suffered. (Laurel J. Brinton and Donna M. Brinton, The Linguistic Structure of Modern English. John Benjamins, 2010) Use of the Definite Article Before Familiar Nouns Definite articles are . . . used when the speaker assumes that because the listener belongs to the same community, he or she shares specific knowledge of their surroundings. For example, if two people who work in the same place are discussing where to meet for lunch, one of them might say something like the first sentence in (36): Rebecca: Lets meet at the cafeteria at 12:15.Paul: Okay, Ill see you then. Here, the definite article is used because both speakers are part of the same work community; the cafeteria is part of their shared knowledge.(Ron Cowan, The Teachers Grammar of English. Cambridge University Press, 2008) Definite Articles Before Proper Names We only use  proper names with a stressed definite article when the person is famous or when we doubt his identity in spite of knowing his name, as in Are you THE Bill Hunter?, implying that there may be different persons of the same name but one is better known than the others. . . . The situation is different with geographical names, or toponyms, which are notorious for their seemingly unsystematic use: some have no article, others have the definite article. Whether a geographical name is used with or without a definite article is often a matter of historical accident. . . .The names of most countries such as Canada take no article, which reflects their conceptualisation of a clearly bounded political entity. Countries or geographical areas that are seen as collections of political units take a plural proper name with the definite article, as in the United States, the Netherlands, and the Baltics.A clear instance of a semantic opposition between the zero-article form and the definite article is found in the names of states such as Ohio and names of rivers such as the Ohio. States are clearly bounded political entities, while rivers are natural phenomena that may stretch for hundreds, even thousands of miles so that we do not have their overall extension in mind. Most river names, therefore, require the definite article to mark an unbounded entity as a unique referent.(Gà ¼nter Radden and Renà © Dirven, Cognitive English Grammar. John Benjamins, 2007) The Most Common Word The is the most commonly used word in the English language, occurring nearly 62,000 times in every million words written or uttered--or about once in every 16 words. Thats more than twice as often as the runner-up, of. . . . Americans do have a thing for the word the. We say in the hospital and in the spring; the British sensibly omit the article. They favor collective or purely regional sports team names, such as Manchester United or Arsenal, while we have the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Angels (which when you translate the Spanish becomes the the Angels Angels), and such syntactical curiosities as the Utah Jazz and the Orlando Magic. (Ben Yagoda, When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It. Broadway Books, 2007) Usage Tip From David Marsh Leaving the out often reads like jargon: say the conference agreed to do something, not conference agreed; the government has to do, not government has to; the Super League (rugby), not Super League.(David Marsh, Guardian Style. Guardian Books, 2007) The Lighter Side of the Definite Article What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common? They have the same middle name.(Ted Cohen, Jokes: Philosophical Thoughts on Joking Matters. The University of Chicago Press, 1999)

The Play King Lear Essay Example For Students

The Play King Lear Essay King Lear is based on appearance and reality. Both fathers in the main plot and the subplot deal with children who deceive by appearances. Lear is taken by false words and appearances just as Gloucester is. Add to this several characters in the play appear to be someone but they turn out to be others such as Edgar disguised as a beggar and Kent disguised as a servant. What concerns the fool, he appears to be foolish but in reality he is wise. Goneril and Regan are the personification of hypocrisy. Goneril exaggerates, by trying to deceive her father and say that her love is inadequate compared to his. The phrase A love that makes breath poor and speech unable prove it. She tries to make her love seem priceless. On the other hand, Regan is no less. Regan tells her father that her own pleasure lies solely in the enjoyment of his love. The sisters love is a means to an end. We will write a custom essay on The Play King Lear specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Reality lies behind appearance when Goneril and Regan remark about their father at the end of the scene on the infirmity of age. They complain about Lears rash judgement and unexplainable behaviour and they are apprehensive that they will receive the same treatment of Codelia and so they resolve that they, must do something, and Ith heat. Appearance and reality have an effect on King Lear. Goneril is sick and tired of her father as she accuses him that due to his character the knights are behaving in an intolerable way, and suggests that disciplinary measures have to be taken. Lear is shocked as he answers her, Are you our daughter?. Lear puts on an act, as a means of expressing his horror and astonishment and these are signs of madness. The phrases, Does any here know me? This is not Lear/ Does Lear walk this? Speak this Where are his eyes? shows a King Lear who is getting weak in his senses. He curses Goneril and says that he still has one kind and comfortable daughter left to go to (Regan), yet she turns out to be made of the same stuff. She tells him to reduce the knights but for Lear, they are a symbol of status. The king attacks and curses his daughter to give birth to a thankless child that will torment her as his own bastard identity as a king. The man is used to flattery and her ingratitude is hurting him. For Lear Kent in the stocks is an insult. When Kent tells Lear that Your son and daughter in reference to the ones that put him there, Lear refuses to believe that Cornwall and Regan are responsible for his servants shame. Lear refuses to see reality. Lear is most concerned with his own mental state as he fears he is becoming hysterical with sorrow. He is affected physically as if his daughters are attacking him for the inside. Lear is shocked when he finds that Regan sides with her sister as she tells him that if she checks his knights there are good reasons. Regan tells Lear to follow Goneril with half of his knights and then he can come in her house. From all those inflated speeches, Lear expects kindness and respect but Goneril does not want, not even the fifty knights. The phrase, I gave you all said by Lear shows biterness as it is a reality that hits him hard. For the many, Cordelia may appear to be cold, disrespectful, as if she wants to challenge her father as she fails to make him happy since she refuses to take part in what one can say, a love contest. She says she has nothing to say as she tells him, What shall Cordelia speak love and be silent. But in reality she is the epitome of a loving daughter and one can apprehend this, because the king of France says that he takes her because she is a woman of integrity. Albeit her father has banished her from the kingdom, Cordelia is really sad when she read the letters, describing Lears treatment at the hands of her sisters. One can see that holy water fell from her heavenly eyes as she lamented Lears plight. Cordelia shows that her love is to an end when she sends her soldiers to search for Lear, who is still wandering outside as she pities and feels for him. She shows a deep genuine concern for her father. The same as Edgar, she assists the parent who rejected her so heartlessly. In act fo ur scene seven, Cordelia does her best to restore her father to sanity as she cares for him through love. Cordelia is feeling sorry for her father. She directs her sympathises towards him. When her father tells her that if she has any poison he will drink I,t she answers, No cause, no cause as for Cordelia, there is no reason why she shouldnt take care of her father, because Cordelia in reality is a woman of principles and integrity. .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .postImageUrl , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:hover , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:visited , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:active { border:0!important; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:active , .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4227b43f6e0e675360653c6c518db4bc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Drama play review EssayOne can draw up a parallelism between the main plot and the subplot on what concerns appearance and reality. Gloucester is taken by false words and appearances, just as Lear is. In both plots the innocent and lovable child is cast off and the father promises his properties to the unworthy children, in return for a show of affection. The evil children gain ground. Since Edmund is the bastard son, he has no rights on the lands. Like Goneril and Regan, Edmund is ready to defend his own interests as he is prepared to do anything seen from the phrase, If Ill not take it with birth, Ill take the land by with. He writes a letter which is supposedly from Edgar where there is written that Edgar seeks his Gloucesters life. He pretends he doesnt want to show to his father, what he wrote. With his father, Edmund acts in a way and with his brother in another way. For Gloucester, Edgar appears the villain but his this is ironical since Edmund is the villain. He shows blind trust in Edmund much that he agrees to let Edmund discover the truth on his brothers feelings. Simply, Gloucester puts himself in his sons power. Edmund pretends to be concerned with family honours, tries to show how loyal he is, when he uses such words as justice to the cause. A number of ironies are seen for instance, when Cornwall tells Edmund, I hear you have shown your father a chil d like office and when he says Nature of this trust we shall need but all this is ironical as he is not trustworthy. In act two scene one Gloucester praises Edmund as a loyal and natural boy and this shows that he accepts Edmund as his only legitimate child. Edmund does not only aim at Edgars inheritance but consequently to his fathers title. We see that appearance lies behind reality when in act three scene five, Edmund turns against his father. He does not show to Cornwall that he hates his father but he wants to prove to Cornwall, that he is loyal to the country and at the same time faithful to his blood. Edmund turns against his parent, his own flesh and blood. Cornwall is given the letter which contains the information about the French invasion as Edmund proves his father he is a spy of France. It because of Edmund that Cornwall intends to punish Gloucester for his treachery. He pretends to be sorry that he has discovered his father but he hopes he will find his father with Lear to make Cornwall even more suspicious. The notion of appearance and reality can be discussed from Edgars point of view as he disguises himself as a mad beggar, Poor Tom. Edgars disguise affects the king and the plot. When Edgar appears as Poor Tom, Lear is convinced that cruel daughters must have reduced this pitiful man to beggary. Edgar has to do his best to be convincing as a madman. In Lears eyes Edgar is the unaccommodated man as he sees Edgar as a poor, bare, forked animal. Lear feels that is only someone like poor Tom who has nothing superfluous (over and above) that can instruct him on the essential nature of man. In Edgars eyes, Gloucester is a devil but in reality he is a loving father. Until Gloucester realises that he was deceived by Edmund, for him Edgar is the unfaithful and wicked son. When in Act four, Edgar guides his gather, for Gloucester he thinks he is guided by a beggar but in reality, he is his son. It might appear for someone that when Kent accuses the king of hideous rashness he is showing lack of respect towards his sovereign. Kent accepts banishment without any rancour and immediately assumes a disguise, applies to Lear for a job, so that he can continue to follow and serve Lear. Kent under no doubt is a dedicated loyal servant in spite of how Lear has treated him. Throughout the play, Lear thinks that beside him there is his servant, but only at the end he gets to know who really lies behind that disguise. .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .postImageUrl , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:hover , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:visited , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:active { border:0!important; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:active , .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua5d171df8ed70160ad73c2155e89c31c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Presented in the play EssayThe fool with all his songs and riddles appears foolish but in reality he is wise. A lot of the fools speeches are designed to alert Lear about his daughters true characters. He points out, that Regan will behave the way Goneril behaved, as it is useless that he pins on the second daughters kindness. The fool is wise in his foolishness and knows that Lear is going to be deceived. In his constant epigrams the fool shows that he is no fool at all but in reality he is sage. The fool generalises about mankind but in actual fact he is referring to Lear, when he tells him that when he is rich they flatter him, but when he becomes poor they do not love him. The fool gives a general truth about selfish humanity. He says that fathers who are not rich have children who do not adore them, where as fathers who are rich, it is the opposite. Added to this he points out too, that the poor are unlucky, and that it is a fact of life. Normally old age is associated with wisdom but in reality King Lear and Gloucester are foolish. Gloucester is foolish as he puts himself in his sons power and never questions and is taken by false words and appearances. Lear is fooled by Gonerills and Regans superficial and elegant speeches and fails to recognise Cordelias and Kents honesty. Lear appears to be powerful with his hundred knights as they are a symbol of might and importance, but in reality he is not, as he is treated with the weary negligence by Oswald and other servants as requested by Goneril. One can see that king that appears only to have power when Lear asks Oswald Who am I sir? and Oswald replies disrespectfully, My ladys father as if he shows him that he does not have any authority anymore. When Lear in his eyes appears wise in reality he is foolish, and when he is mad he shows the true traits of wisdom. When Kent, Lear and the fool are in the storm, the king shows concern for the fool and one understands this from the phrase, boy go first. You houseless poverty and here one starts to see the purification of the king. In his madness, the king starts acquiring a social conscience. We are already seeing the redemption of the king by spending the night in a hovel, as he reduces himself to a commoner and understands what people go through as the phrase, The art of our necessities is strange, And can make vile things precious as for Lear, necessities make things that once appeared so evil look precious. Lear tells Kent to take shelter first himself and this proves that the king starts understanding himself and others better. When he starts to talk about the poor naked wretches he realises that he should have taken much more care of the equity of justice. The kings social con scious begins to work, as in his madness the king becomes social revolutionary and from such phrase as , Is man no more than this? one can confirm it. He says that, if the rich are to expose themselves to what the poor feels, they might give what they dont need to the poor and the world would be more just. The same accounts for Gloucester as only when he is blind in reality he sees. The phrase said by Gloucester, I have no way, and therefore want no eyes; I stumbled when I saw confirms that when he was blind in reality he understands what is happening around him and Gloucester realises his mistake and wishes to be reconciled to Edgar. Through the several themes and one of them is, the notion of appearance and reality, the reader comes to a fuller understanding of the play. We get to feel and understand more the sufferings of King Lear and Gloucester.

What To Do About Non-standard English

What To Do About Non-standard English What To Do About Non-standard English What To Do About Non-standard English By Maeve Maddox One of our readers expresses the dilemma faced by conscientious speakers and writers who value a standard form of English, but recognize that rapid changes are taking place. So, just where do we draw the line? Now that I’m no longer a â€Å"prescriptivist,† what is acceptable? When can I start pulling out my hair again?! Good question. Prescriptivist is a dirty word, yet unadulterated descriptivism is not only impractical, it is impossible. Even the dictionaries that operate from a descriptivist perspective cannot possibly record every usage from every community of speakers. So, as the reader asks, where do we draw the line? In this age of militant anti-authoritarianism, evangelical multi-culturalism, and pedagogical malpractice, its not an easy question to answer. Language is an intensely personal matter. When it comes to usage and pronunciation, each user of the language has to decide where the line is to be drawn. Advocates of standard English tend to feel blood pressure rising when they see or hear non-standard usage in what is felt to be an inappropriate context. Suggesting that one form of speech is preferable to another, however, can annoy people no end. (Even when you do it on a language site.) In the interest of keeping blood pressures down, I offer these guidelines for people who are â€Å"tearing their hair† over non-standard usage. Recognize that even your fellow advocates may not agree with you as to what is or is not standard English Numerous forms of British and American English are spoken in different parts of the world. Different forms are â€Å"standard† in different places. Acknowledge that linguistic change is inevitable The point of having a standard written dialect is not to fossilize the language, but to permit change to take place at a slower pace. Don’t object blindly to new usage merely because it’s new. Have valid reasons for your objections. Know what you mean by â€Å"standard† English Provide yourself with a good dictionary. Browse the style manuals and choose one or two that you find easy to use. Dont hesitate to disagree with them if you have solid reasons for doing so. Cherish your own dialect and use it with those who can appreciate it. Use a standard dialect when you want to be understood by speakers not familiar with your home dialect. Use non-standard English in context In writing, consider your targeted audience and choose the most appropriate language for that audience. If youre a script writer, consider the occupations and backgrounds of the various characters in your story. Dont have them all talk the same. For example, dont have the characters with college degrees say things like Me and Professor Jones have created an algorithm, or, To celebrate my new tenure, I’ve made reservations for Sally and I at the French restaurant. Model standard English Correct your children’s grammar. Talk to them about word choice. If youre a teacher (any subject, not just English), model standard English to your students. Insist that they speak and write standard English in the context of school and schoolwork. If you have the type of job that makes it appropriate for you to correct the usage of your staff (editor, office manager, etc.) go for it. Provide your employees with a style sheet and insist that they use standard English in writing, and when speaking to clients. Be nice Once your children are grown, bite your tongue. Outside the role of a parent, teacher, or employer, don’t take on the responsibility of correcting other people’s English, unless they ask you to. I see nothing wrong with pointing out errors that appear in printed sources. Advertisers, journalists, and others who use the language in a public way should be in command of standard English. Even then, corrective criticism can be offered in a courteous, helpful manner. There’s no need to accompany corrections with sarcasm, ridicule, or ad hominem attacks. When it comes to our grown kinfolk, neighbors, or co-workers, we need to recognize that, like everything else in life, â€Å"standard English† has its place. It’s only one of several dialects. It may be the most universally useful, but it is not intrinsically better than any other. Informal conversation is not public speaking. Jumping in to correct usage or pronunciation is not only inappropriate, it’s disrespectful. You can promote â€Å"standard English† without trying to wipe out every other form. Draw the line where you think it needs to be drawn in your use of the language. Let other speakers and writers make their own choices. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? How to Say Negative Commands in Italian

How to Say Negative Commands in Italian Throughout childhood, we grow up hearing negative commands. Our parents say phrases, like Dont bother your brother!, Stop yelling!, Dont forget to do your homework!, or Don’t make a mess! And even though our intention isn’t to learn Italian so we can yell negative commands at our children, knowing how to use them in Italian can prove useful, particularly in situations like giving advice to a friend about a guy that sounds like trouble or suggesting that someone not eating something unhealthy. But first, where do these negative commands come from? The Imperative Mood The imperative mood is a way of giving advice, suggestions, or commands. If you need a refresher, read this article: The Imperative Mood in Italian. When it comes using this mood, the form of the verb depends on whether you use the â€Å"tu† form, the â€Å"lei† form, the â€Å"noi† form, and the â€Å"voi† form, which I’ll break down below. Negative Commands Using the â€Å"tu† Form The negative tu command forms of all verbs are formed by the infinitive of the verb preceded by non: Non dire cosà ¬! - Don’t talk like that!Non fare il guastafeste! - Don’t be a party-pooper!Non mangiare quell’hamburger! Non à ¨ sano. - Don’t eat that hamburger! It’s not healthy. But what happens when you start to add some more complicated elements to the mix, like pronouns, for example? Non andarci! - Don’t go there!Non glielo dare! / Non darglielo! - Dont give it to him!Non ne parlare mai pià ¹! - Don’t bring it up ever again! If you’re dealing with reflexive verbs, you would either place the pronoun at beginning or at the end of the conjugated verb, like: Non ti preoccupare! / Non preoccuparti! - Don’t worry!Non ti addormentare. / Non addormentarti. - Don’t fall asleep.Non ti sposare! / Non sposarti! - Don’t get married! Negative Commands Using the â€Å"lei† Form The negative â€Å"lei† command is formed by placing â€Å"non† before the verb that’s been conjugated in the imperative mood. Non parli! - Don’t speak!Non mangi quel piatto. - Don’t eat that dish.Non parta! - Don’t leave!Non creda (a) quello che dice lui! - Don’t believe what he says! Negative Commands Using the â€Å"noi† and â€Å"voi† Forms The negative â€Å"noi† and â€Å"voi: command forms of all verbs are formed simply by placing non before the affirmative forms: Voi Non dormite! - Don’t sleep!Non fate rumore! - Don’t make a sound!Non parlate! - Don’t speak!Non fumate! - Don’t smoke!Non andate in quel mercato per fare la spesa, andate in un altro. - Don’t go to that store to do the shopping, go to a different one. Noi Non dormiamo! - Let’s not sleep.Non facciamo rumore. - Let’s not make any noise.Non andiamo in quel mercato per fare la spesa, andiamo in un altro. - Let’s not go to that store to do the shopping, let’s go to a different one. Tip: Notice how the â€Å"noi† form is less seen as a command and more often seen as a suggestion.

Windows Server Deployment Proposal Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Windows Server Deployment Proposal - Assignment Example In addition, it also proposes a File and Sharing system that is suitable for a firm that is growing such as Worldwide Inc. The Windows Server 2012 is characterized by a wide range of new features ranging from much improved storage, wider chances for networking and more remote access. Moreover, it is characterized by a server administration characteristics all of which come together to significantly enhance on the functionality of this operating system. Many of these features especially in the area of storage could be of distinct help to Worldwide Inc especially because it deals with advertising that requires a great deal of storage (Tulloch, 2014). Throughout the server’s infrastructure, Window’s Server 2012 with Hyper V will be used and will be secured using a secure tunnel since it will provide support for the work done at Worldwide Inc. Moreover, Hyper-V will present the chance for the company to take full advantage of the servers it already has while at the same time enabling it to take full advantage of the new technology on the hardware for virtualization (Tulloch, 2014). Considering the fact that when making the decision to design and select the system specifications for a new solution of a server, it is important to consider that even the most optimal requirements for the system from Microsoft might not be requisite. In this regard, an assessment of the specifications of the planned server role while at the same time taking the load during the time that the deployment will be carried out since this will also take the growth of the firm into consideration (Finn et al, 2013). The table below shows the requi rements for deployment of Windows 2012. There are only two editions available within Windows server 2012; Standard and Datacenter with each of the editions supporting a Server Core version. It is recommended that a new installation be carried out as opposed to upgrading on the company’s already existing server. Installing a new

Personal Development Plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Personal Development Plan - Essay Example It contains details recommendations with regard to introduction that should be made in order to make the positive changes come true. This is particularly important since it shows that the two ethical theories that are being discussed can be effectively applied in practice making a person a better leader. For example, the call for not treating people as means, but only as end urges a leader to respect each of the followers and never allow one to become a faceless unit that is used to achieve a certain purpose. The idea of good will is linked to the idea of perspective and the ability of a leader to outline the development of the group and facilitate it. The text also features an outline for discussion regarding integration of the two theories in question into a personal leadership plan in order to achieve a stronger presence. Thus, the Categorical imperative will contribute to the ability of a leader to choose the right option all the time and Justice as Fairness approach will ensure the appreciation of the followers. It may be particularly important to explore the values and standards that reflect the meaning of each ethical theory. The first aspect that should be remembered with regard to Categorical imperative is the need treat people as ends and never as means (Cornman & Lehrer, 1968, p. 336). This reflects the universal appreciation of one’s significance and dignity and should be maintained by all the people. Another point that should be mentioned is the notion of good will (Paton, 1971, p. 201). This means that the consequences of the action may not fully define the nature of the action, but it is good will of the subject that also should be taken into account. Indeed, if a person performs action that is largely considered to be a moral one because of the reasons that are not considered to be moral, it is obvious that on the whole the action will not be recognized as a good one. Finally, one of

Superior Flexor Muscle Cells :: Biology Essays Research Papers

Effects of Extracellular Potassium Concentration on Membrane Potentials in Crayfish Superior Flexor Muscle Cells Intracellular measurement of membrane potentials in cells of the crayfish superficial flexor muscle can reveal the effects of varying the extracellular concentrations of potassium ion on the resting potential. Our results suggest that at high extracellular potassium concentrations, the resting potential resembles that of the potassium’s equilibrium potential, and at low potassium concentrations, resting potential is less related to potassium equilibrium potential. We suggest that the equilibrium potential of other ions, especially sodium, contribute more heavily to the resting potential when extracellular potassium concentration is low, which accounts for the resting potential having a less negative voltage than the potassium equilibrium potential. The determination of resting potential by the equilibrium potentials of numerous ions reduces the effect that concentration changes in any single ion will have on the resting potential, lending stability to neural cell function even during changing environmental conditions. We tested the effect of extracellular potassium concentration on membrane potentials in the crayfish superficial flexor muscle cells. We compared five different extracellular concentrations of K+ and measured resting potentials by recording extracellularly and intracellulary, using an electrode that was inserted into the muscle via a micropipette. Our results confirm the relationship between voltage across the membrane and equilibrium potentials of the most prevalent ions that is stated by the Goldman Equation. Micropipettes were constructed from capillary tubes with tip diameter of a fraction of a micron. A micropipette and holder were filled with 3M KCl; use of this saturated solution ensured that intracellular K+ did not diffuse from the cell up the pipette. The top of the holder, which connected to the Neuroprobe amplifier circuitry, contained an Ag/AgCl electrode to prevent the hydrolysis of water, which would have created bubbles of hydrogen gas that would interfere with current conduction. The crayfish superficial muscle was exposed by making a U-shaped cut in the dorsal carapace and removing the dorsal muscles, leaving only the ventral carapace, its attached muscles, and possibly the nerve cord. This region was then placed in a small plasticene dish covered with one of five crayfish Ringers’ solutions. Normal (1x) crayfish Ringer’s solution contained [K+] = 5.4 mM and was used as a control; the four experimental solutions contained [K+] of .54 (.1x), 16.2 (3x), 54 (10x), and 162 (30x) mM respectively. Despite the non-uniformity of total osmolarity, the proportion of K+ to Cl-, the other important diffusible ion, remained constant, satisfying the Donnan Equilibrium.

Nature and Function of Literary Criticism Essay

The word criticism is derived from the Greek word meaning † judgment†. Hence, criticism was known to be the exercise of judgment on works of literature, or it can be said that criticism is the play of mind to observe the merits and defects on the work of literature. A critic , therefore, is a person who expresses judgment on works of literature or poetry or the art of an artist or a painter. The critic is also defined as a person who is possessed of the knowledge necessary to enable him to pronounce right judgments upon the merits or worth of such works as come within its province. However, the question that is always asked, does the critic has the right to judge or not ? Indeed, no one has the right to judge the people because of two reasons. Firstly, to judge the people is something subjective ; in other words, when a critic evaluate a literary work he is judge based on or influenced by his personal feelings, tastes, or opinions. Second, when a critic judge and evaluate a literary work , he eliminates the reader’s mind and deactivate his faculty of thinking and analysis. It’s known that the target group of the critics is the public reader, so what do they want from the reader and what is the ultimate objective of criticism?. Actually, the modern understanding of criticism is regarded as having two different functions which helps to achieve the main purposes of criticism. The Modern Understanding of Criticism Criticism is the process of analysis and description and interpretation of literary works for the purpose of increasing understanding and raising appreciation.   This means that the critic should penetrate to the heart of the literary work to analyze and formulate its meaning , to disengage and describe its qualities of power and beauty , and to elucidate by direct examination the artistic and moral principles which, whether the writer himself was conscious of them or not , have actually guided and controlled his labors, and then to pronounce a right evaluation of a literary work. It’s worth to realize that criticism does not depend on a critic’s views or his opinions , but it depends on scientific basis which is † Critical  Theories†. As a result, criticisms are completely different depending on the theory that the critic uses. Thus, the objective of literary criticism is to determine the artistic values, poetic beauty, or the features being regarded as inadequate existing in the works of literature in order to 1-Helping the reader to gain a better understanding of nature and value of literature, and a better appreciation of the pleasure proper to literature, then to form an evaluation of his own. 2- Helping the writer to improve his skills and facilitate to achieve the merits while allowing him to overcome the flaws if any. At this stage, it would be appropriate to say that criticism is not just † fault- finding† , but helping the writer or poets or artists in achieving the excellence in their works and leading the reader to a better understanding and appreciation. At this point , the saying of T.S Eilot is worth mentioning, † The end of criticism is the elucidation of works of art and to correction of taste†.
